OpenAI is moving closer to closing a massive private funding round.
The company is reportedly working to raise up to $30 billion at a pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion. Sources tell CNBC that Coatue and investors from the United Arab Emirates are leading this new effort. This development suggests the AI lab may delay its initial public offering to secure additional private capital first. Terms are still under negotiation, so the final numbers could shift. The UAE portion of the deal may also include a separate agreement to secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI.
This new valuation target follows a similar report from Bloomberg last month. That report indicated the company was aiming for a $1.4 trillion valuation for a similar $30 billion raise. OpenAI has not commented on the latest developments. If the company successfully commands a valuation exceeding $1 trillion, it would break records. It would become the most valuable private company in history. This milestone would also set a higher bar for its upcoming public debut.
OpenAI filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June. That filing came after its last funding round in March valued the ChatGPT maker at $852 billion on a post-money basis. The new round would significantly increase that figure. A higher private valuation complicates the math for a public listing. Investors will expect the stock to perform strongly to justify the premium. The company must demonstrate growth that matches its extraordinary price tag.
The high valuation at OpenAI also creates ripples for its main rival, Anthropic. Many industry observers believe Anthropic’s IPO is imminent. Rumors suggest its public S-1 filing could appear at any time. According to CNBC, Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for its public debut. This target is slightly higher than OpenAI’s current reported pre-money figure. It signals intense competition for market dominance in the AI sector.
Anthropic raised $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation. At the time, many believed that would be its last major private round before going public. The company also filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June. Both giants are now in a race to establish their value in the public markets. The private rounds are serving as final benchmarks before they test investor appetite on the stock exchange. The outcome of OpenAI’s current negotiations will likely influence how Anthropic prices its own offering.
The shift toward a larger private raise highlights the sheer scale of capital required in the AI industry. Companies are no longer content with standard venture funding. They are seeking tens of billions of dollars to secure infrastructure and talent. The involvement of sovereign wealth from the UAE adds a geopolitical dimension to the deal. It may also provide critical hardware support. As negotiations continue, the tech world watches closely. The final numbers will define the landscape for AI investment in the coming years.
